CPU872

CPU Tech’s CPU872 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) contains dual high performance PowerPC® 440 and FPU cores, dual embedded DRAMs and numerous other functions.  It provides maximum sustained performance on real-world problems while consuming only 8 Watts; less than 30% of other comparable offerings.  The CPU872 also contains intrinsic techniques against tampering and reverse-engineering that protects the user’s valuable intellectual property contained in the software.  The targeted markets include financial, military and aerospace, communications and others that maintain critical infrastructures or need unsurpassed performance/watt/area.

In addition to the dual 2.0 DMIPS/MHz PowerPC and dual 64-bit, 2.0 MFLOPS/MHz FPU cores, the CPU872 also includes utility compute engines which accelerate the I/O performance while off-loading the 440 cores.  These utility engines ensure that the 440 and FPU cores operate at peak sustained performance so applications are completed in less time and with lower power than other PowerPC offerings.

Power

At full performance, the CPU872 consumes only 8 Watts for two complete computing nodes.

Security

To guard against the insertion of malicious circuits or other Trojan Horses, the CPU872 is fabricated at the IBM Trusted Foundry in cooperation with the Trusted Access Program Office.  The SoC contains a multi-layered group of effective and resilient run-time techniques so the user can select the desired level of protection.  In all cases, the protection does not impact the performance on the device.  For more information, contact CPU Tech.

Integration

With double the density of other offerings, the CPU872 SoC contains two complete compute nodes on a chip.  This highly integrated SoC can replace up to eight chips, resulting in significant savings in board space, cost and power and increased reliability.  For applications requiring substantial amounts of computing, the device scales without requiring any additional parts to achieve the best compute density in the industry.

Availability

Samples are available now to qualified customers with production units shipping in 4Q08.  With the IBM Trusted Foundry, the CPU872 has a protected supply chain and a 10+ year lifespan.  The part is rated at industrial and is designed for rugged environments.
